Ms. Grischow from Pittsburgh PA is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students the experience of attending this rare opportunity to see and be inspired by both this Mummies of the World Exhibition and hands on activities at the Carnegie Science Center.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The "Mummies" exhibit at Carnegie Science Center is a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience, and it is only available in Pittsburgh during the 2019-2020 school year. It will be an experience that goes far beyond the textbook, classroom lectures, labs, photographs and simulated models for our students.
At our school our goal is to provide students with knowledge, understanding and appreciation of a diverse global community; the wisdom to participate as productive, caring leaders of the future with a passion for lifelong learning.
Most of our students have encountered significant struggles in their young lives as many come from communities that have low socioeconomic status. Our students have such potential and are so capable, they just need motivation and resources such as this trip to guide them.
Students taking Human Anatomy and Physiology, AP Biology and Med-quest will be attending the field trip to Carnegie Science Center. Through the field trip experience the students will see the anatomy of the human body literally from the inside out. This will provide a powerful experience that can inspire people to be more concerned about their own health; to seek careers in the health professions; and to be interested in medical research and history.
Learning from real human specimens helps to make a person feel a part of humanity, which simulation cannot do.
In addition, our school district is composed of a variety of communities, with many students living in an economically depressed area. Very few students that are going on the field trip would be able to attend this experience on their own. Even though we are a suburb just outside of Pittsburgh, some students have not even been downtown.
This is a rare opportunity that can help inspire those students who are interested in a career in the medical field, research, or history. Studying mummies provides insight into ancient peoples, environments and civilizations. The field trip will also help promote discussion and action about healthy lifestyles through the Body Works Exhibit and discussion about new technology.
