Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my mathematics classroom we learn math in the context of living in the reality of our lives and community. It is exciting, challenging, and very rewarding to teach middle school to my students. They are passionate advocates for themselves and immensely challenged by the circumstances they face. Many are new immigrants, English language learners, and from low income families and neighborhoods. Often they come in believing that Math is not relevant to their life. Some of them have harsh realities and challenges just surviving, let alone thriving.
They inspire me to be my best and to raise my capacities to inspire them to work hard and learn that they can master learning, master math, and thrive in this world with consistent focused work.
I am not satisfied with the status quo and that is what I work to inspire in them. The rewards of making a difference with these students really hit home and leave me moved and inspired. I find myself often crying when I am really being with them.
My Project
The world-wide pandemic has created many challenges for education. I want to attend the virtual Conference for Global Transformation to be inspired and be inspiring for my students and peers of the possibility of living into a vision of contributing to the world we all want to see come to reality.
I am most looking forward to the sessions from individuals truly making a difference for our planet and how they built up a community of support for their project.
I know all the great people I will meet at these sessions will keep me living into this life of possibility so I can continue to share possibility with my students and peers. My students have really tough lives and they often come to class with a lot of extra challenges and situations. It takes a huge reservoir of of grit and social-emotional skills to continue to be an example and possibility for them. I am counting on this transformational conference to give me the resources to carry my students forward so they are being self-determined and choosing the path of getting the most out of their life and public education. Inspiring them to live a life of community service.
