My students come to middle school excited, curious, and hopeful about the future. Middle school can be a hard transition, but they tend to handle themselves with grace and lots of silliness.
Having taught in NYC and internationally, I try to bring current events and societal issues into our classroom discussions.
As new middle school students, this is often the first time they are thinking critically about these issues. I am always impressed by how they are willing to think deeply about topics outside of their comfort zones and push themselves to achieve the high expectations I set for them. My students primarily all have similar backgrounds, so exposure to different cultures and values is something I constantly strive to bring to them.
Technology is a big part of our district and while there are challenges that come with it, my students are learning to be good digital citizens while learning valuable 21st-century skills. Along with technology, a big focus of my class is on the soft skills that tend to get pushed to the side in place of content.
My Project
I admire the strength and resilience my students have shown during this pandemic. Being brand new to 6th grade, my students have handled the transition to middle school well, all while navigating our every changing schedule from virtual to hybrid and learning new learning platforms.
I want to give my students the opportunity to have a teaching artist from the renowned Coterie Theatre in Kansas City to virtually visit with my students over the course of three sessions.
Students will work with the teaching artists on the topic of heroes; something I think needs to be focused on right now. Students will get the opportunity to learn about heroes, both modern or historical, and write a monologue. This opportunity will also help students with their analytical skills by analyzing what goes into a good monologue. I know my students not only need but will be ecstatic about the opportunity to see a new face this year.
