Inspiring Students to be Kind Through Shared Stories
Help me give my students inspiring stories and see more diverse characters in books. Wishtree is an amazing tale of how a community helps a young girl experiencing racism.

Hooray! This project is fully funded
I teach at a wonderful inner city school. We have more than 600 students that speak over 10 different languages, and many live in less than ideal economic situations. 100% of our students receive free lunch. Our faculty is incredible, ensuring that our students receive an excellent education and often providing other necessities such as school supplies, clothing, and food.
Our school is near the local mission, so we serve homeless students who reside at the shelter, as well as homeless students who live in cars, and those that move from place to place daily.
Despite the hardships my students face, they are incredibly motivated to succeed. These children are bright and kind. They work hard and want to be prepared for middle school as well as life!
Our school is striving to make reading exciting and important to students. One way we achieve this goal is through shared stories. All of the classes read a book together and have conversations about the story. We want to read books that have diverse characters so that our students can read about people who look like them. This encourages students to read, think, speak about their experiences, and work together.
We chose Wishtree as our book this year because it is timely, as it deals with discrimination, racism, and kindness in a gentle way that children will understand and hopefully learn and grow from.
We want all of our students to be able to participate in this amazing and uplifting story of friendship and bravery.
