Our students are mostly first-and second-generation Americans who are learning to be independent learners before moving on to middle school. They receive free breakfast and lunch and live below the American poverty line.
Our school is part of a district initiative to increase performance for English language learners.
In this program, the students receive extra support in reading and language acquisition. They must work much harder than their native speaking peers to learn the same content. That they achieve growth regularly is a testament to their hard work and commitment to learning.
My Project
The books I chose for this project are some favorites of my students. Many of them are replacements for books we've worn out over the years.
Once my students discover a favorite series, they devour the books!
This is true for both the Junie B. Jones and Magic Treehouse series. We use those books in small groups to help students who are below grade level access chapter books and understand plot.
I have also requested books of poetry to add to the poetry section of my classroom library, which is entirely too small. I love to teach poetry, and I need to add more resources to those I already use.
