This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a math and science magnet school with very curious and active children. I have 18 students with varying backgrounds and mostly from a low SES. Some of my students have a very rocky home life. Most students come to school with little to no school supplies, some are even homeless. My class is the only place where there is daily consistency for many of my students. My classroom is their safe place, a place where they know someone cares about them.
My Project
Every year, my school has a competition between the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders testing student's knowledge on the Sunshine State Readers. These books are high interest but can be difficult for 3rd graders to read. Having some of the Sunshine State Readers in their hands, and having enough copies so that the students can partner read them, will allow my students to be successful reading these books and build their confidence to read the more difficult books in the set. The students are always excited to try to beat the older grades in the Battle of the Books at the end of the year, and these books will give them a head start at finishing them all.
