The majority of my day is centered around engaging my 5th graders to develop an intrinsic love of reading and writing. We spend a lot of time reading with "a writer's eye," or looking at various texts and appreciating techniques authors utilize in their books. We discuss parts of books we love and what makes us love those parts, and how books and writing can change us as a reader, and influence our point of view.
Although my students come from a variety of backgrounds and varying academic needs, each one of them is eager to grow his or her reading and writing skills.
I always love it when students make a connection in a book they are reading, try out an author's writing technique in their own writing, or when they impress themselves with the fact they read more than they thought they could.
My Project
Having a library full of choice allows my students to find just the right book to grow their passion for reading and writing! Students will be able to choose from different titles, levels, genres authors, and writing styles. New books will replace many of the books that are beginning to fall apart from many years of student use. New books will also provide some modern options that will motivate more reluctant readers to engage with books. Having several copies of the same book will provide opportunities for students to partner read or form mini books clubs to build comprehension skills through discussion and shared reading. By adding several series options, students can move from one book to the next without having to worry about finding the next "just right" book, especially if they are more of a reluctant reader. More classroom books will especially benefit those students who do not have access to books outside of school as students will be able to borrow from our classroom library.
One of the greatest things we can do for our students is to teach them how to love reading.
The best way to grow an intrinsic love of reading and writing is to have exposure to and experience with a wide variety of books. My project will do just that.
