Inspiring NJROTC Cadets with Military History Resources
My students need American military history resources, such as The Vietnam War, American Battles and Campaigns, and The Art of Command, to explore their interests in military service.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are ninth graders in English Nine for the first time and eleventh/twelfth graders in a remediation class. A few of the ninth graders read on grade level, but many have not developed an identity as readers. The eleventh/twelfth graders have failed the State English test multiple times. This test is a requirement for a high school diploma. The remediation class includes ELL/ESL students who need extra practice. The test assesses both reading and writing. Another required test my students prepare for is the business literacy test, which is another requirement for graduation.
My students set and achieve goals in order to succeed in high school.
Those in ninth grade work hard to earn a high school diploma, as well as keeping their sights on careers and college for life after high school. My students in the remediation class will need to balance short and long-term goals as they work towards passing the state test and finalize plans for careers and college.
My Project
Materials will be available on a daily basis as part of the classroom library and as core texts in research units. I selected these resources because they explain different aspects of serving in the military. This includes leadership traits, battle strategy and uniform insignia.
Students will be engaged for three reasons: they enlist after graduation, their parents serve in the military, and they are cadets in our NJROTC program.
During our research units, students will work in groups to use different types of analysis to study themes and record their notes on index cards. Students will compare/contrast leaderships traits and look for cause/effect patterns in different wars. Students will make presentations to share their findings with others. The classroom library is available because we study a topic of personal interest every day for fifteen minutes. During this activity, students can read independently, complete ASVAB practice tests or view documentaries.
