Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everyday we make each other laugh, help each other, and everyone learns at least one thing. I love how eager they are to learn and how they help each other out. We take pride in being a community. English is a second language for all of my students. They come from low income households. They are the sweetest kids, who try so hard. The school has murals in the halls and at the entrance of school. We are a Title 1 school which means that most families are low income. Parents help out as much as they can and volunteer their time. We are close knit and try to help where we can.

My Project

This book is based on a true story about Sylvia Mendez and Aki Munemitsu. The story is important for 4th grade because it takes place in California during WWII. Aki ends up in an internment camp and Sylvia's family fights for the desegregation of California schools.

The book is a lesson in tolerance and fighting for what is right.

It has strong female characters and includes different cultures. The book compares the lives of Sylvia and Aki and what struggles they had to through during this time.

It is important for students living in California to understand its past and how it has shaped our state policies today.
