Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title 1 school that struggles with funding. We are an AVID elementary school that works toward college and career readiness skills from the youngest ages. STEM opportunities are very important to our students, who can truly benefit from being inspired by science, technology, engineering and math.
Most students at our school qualify for free lunches and I have students in my class who do not have any access to computers or the internet at home, so school is their only opportunity for accessing and learning in such subject areas.
My Project
Working in a Title 1 school, many of our children live in high-poverty situations and have no role models when it comes to dreaming of and achieving higher education and careers. Our AVID elementary school aims to inspire children to dream big and achieve through their own determination and hard work.
Inspiration begins in the classroom.
My students need building toys that will inspire the engineer in them. STEM activities are an integral part of learning. We have done fun activities that combine close reading and LEGO building designs, but we had to borrow LEGOS and still didn't have enough for everyone.
Sometimes, as a treat, I let students play educational games. They are more often drawn to the math manipulatives and want to stack and build. We would love to have STEM toys that are designed for that. Your support means a lot to these children.
I have included people and accessories in this request because adding those things to their designs really seems to make students' imaginations go wild. They really create a story when they have those things.
