Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am new teacher, I am in my third year of teaching Transitional Kindergarten and this year my school is launching the Daily 5. A big part of our day is spent on literacy and learning to read. My classroom is choice based, letting my students explore and create, learning hands on.
My students are very bright and eager to learn.
I have more students this year than any previous year I have taught ready to read. My goal is to promote and instill a love for reading, and for my students to be super excited about reading. However our current library is lacking all of that. It is very small and uninviting. All we have is one small book shelf and four plastic chairs. Some of my students do love reading and listening to stories and still spend time in our little library. However it is usually the same few students. I want all my students to be engaged and excited about reading. I feel that a large inviting, comfortable library will entice my students to read even more! I do have a lot of support from the families and staff just not enough funds to provide ample shelves and a nice carpet. I have been working with what I have in the past, but I learned of this great opportunity and would love to provide my students with an inviting classroom library! Thank you!
My Project
I have cleared out a large space in my classroom that already has some built in shelves which I will use to place baskets on filled with books. I would like to have two book display shelves to make high interest books easy to see and also as a space divider to enclose the library from the other areas in my classroom. The other two small book display shelves will sit on top of my built in shelves to also display high interest book easily for my TK students. They have short attention spans and sometimes books in baskets are forgotten about because they are not easily seen. I also would like a large beautiful carpet that is inviting and bright to encourage students to stay and get comfortable to build stamina to read longer and stronger!
The goal of having students in TK is to promote early literacy and to close the gap of students who would have been left behind because of their age.
The more children we can expose to reading and writing to meet the high demands of kindergarten the more successful they will be in all their school years to come. I feel that currently my classroom is lacking in this area. It would make a huge impact and difference in the atmosphere of my classroom, creating a love for learning and reading!
