Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My heart’s desire for this year is to have students so lost in the adventure of a book they don’t hear their mom call them to dinner or the dismissal bell ring. Kids so focused on the drama or laughing so hard at the ridiculousness of a story that they want to take the book to lunch or to recess to finish the chapter. Then see them acting out the story or excitedly sharing it with a friend. My goal is to ignite that kind of reading passion for a lifetime.
C S Lewis, the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, says, “But in reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself.”
We are a fabulous class of 29 second graders eager to learn and discover every new concept put before us. The majority of the students in my classroom are second language learners with parents that are struggling to make ends meet. Priorities are providing the basics without time or money to purchase books or visit libraries. My desire is to provide a diverse classroom library for students with books that strike their passion for reading, building rich vocabularies, analytical skills, comprehensions skills and more!
My Project
As a new teacher to second grade, I do not currently have enough books at my students' reading level. I am eager to fill the Storex large book bins with books, books and more books that are appropriate for my class!
Students will have their reading adventures daily as they choose books that excite their interests and ignite their passion for reading.
Research shows that those who read for pleasure don't just improve academics and vocabulary but also develop stronger communication and problem solving skills and even empathy towards others. Our goal is to have every student read at least 100 minutes each week. Students will be encouraged to choose a variety of books that will expand their interests and challenge their skills.
