Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I started using mentor sentences to enrich my students' vocabulary and writing skills. I have only been using this for a few weeks, but I already see a huge improvement in my students' writing. These picture books will enhance my students vocabulary and engage their minds.
The majority of my students are second language learners who have not been exposed to a diverse vocabulary.
Due to their cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds many of my students do not have opportunities to hear, and see correct English. They need the opportunity to hear examples of the language from others.
They are eager 4th graders who love to read. They have a thirst to expand their vocabulary, and are already showing me that they love writing. My favorite part of our day is watching their eyes light up as we read the mentor texts. They love hearing the new book for the week and they also enjoy trying to write in the new style we are learning.
I want the opportunity to continue our study of mentor texts through these picture books so I can continue to inspire life long readers and writers.
My Project
These mentor texts will allow my students to enhance their love for reading and writing and to expand their vocabularies. It is my mission to make sure my students leave my classroom with a love for books and a richer vocabulary. By using these books, my students will not only have the opportunity to hear and see the language through beautifully written texts, but they will also be learning how to improve their own writing. These books will be used to build upon my library of mentor texts to expose my students to picture books rich in vocabulary.
Each week we will study a new book, and focus on one mentor sentence. Students will become familiar with the parts of speech. They will also have the chance to revise the sentence to make it even better and finally write their own sentence in the same style as the author. These books will expose my students to a wealth of information in a hands on and meaningful way that will create life long readers and writers.
These mentor texts will give me the opportunity to improve my students writing and speaking skills.
They will leave my classroom as life long readers and writers with a diverse vocabulary. Using the mentor texts and mentor sentences each week will help prepare my students to become successful readers, writers, and speakers.
