Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is in the heart of a gang and drug-infested neighborhood, where students struggle to get to school due to the many challenges they must encounter on the way in and out. The average home is supported by a single income with multiple dependents.
Most of my students are not aware that they can program the very technology that they depend on every second of their waking day.
Many of them are not aware that computer programming can be turned into a career.
In addition, the majority of my students are not certain what they will be doing after they graduate from high school. Many of them will have attended school twice as long as their parents did in their home countries. Most of the female students in my school do not see computer science as a field in which they can achieve success. Teaching these students computer science will open the doors to endless possibilities, for them, for their families, and for our future.
My Project
During this professional development I will increase my knowledge of the Beauty and Joy of Coding Curriculum. I will solidify my knowledge of SNAP! programming environment. I will also learn how to help my students increase their chances of getting a passing score on the National Board's AP Computer Science Principles Exam.
For my school, the ultimate goal is to help students use their computer programming skills to create advanced designs for theater productions: including sets, lights, sounds, and costumes.
Furthermore, I would like to expose my female students to the possibilities that exist for them in the field of computer science. I am hoping that they will learn that they can become successful software developers and enter successfully into challenging, yet highly rewarding careers, and become vessels of change.
