I am teaching 9-12 science in a rural school in South Dakota. Our school is located in a reservation area and most of my students belong to low income families. Though we are a small school, we have pretty good group of students that are mostly dynamic, open to learn new things and willing to share what they've learn to others.
Whenever they are given a certain task or project, they try to go beyond what is expected of them.
One of the projects we have in science is by demonstrating what the've learned in class by giving them performance tasks. One of the ways we do these is by letting them perform some science demonstrations to grade schoolers. The high schoolers are doing these for the small kids for 2 consecutive years already and positive feedback was given to us.
By this, they will be able to go beyond what they've learned in the classroom by reaching out and inspiring small kids to learn more about science and help them see that science could be fun to learn in a greater perspective.
The mobile lab table project for my class will give them a more flexible way for them to go from one classroom to another to share what they've learned to others.
