My Students

"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." -Maya Angelou With the help of Donors Choose, I will be able to encourage my students to form a habit of reading.

I have students ranging in levels from foundation (lower level) to honors (college-prep level) in grades 9-12.

My students come from very diverse backgrounds (many were born in foreign countries) and all bring different personalities to their classes. Overall, my students are positive, are hard-workers, and are engaged in their learning.

My Project

Recently, I have incorporated an independent reading program into my Sophomore Honors English class. Some students bring in books from home, some take out library books, and some venture to my classroom library. Unfortunately, many of the books in the classroom library are books from when I was their age, meaning that some of the books could be more than 15 years old. Not exactly cutting edge. I want them to have a wide variety of books to choose from so that they can find a book that will work for them. When they learn to appreciate reading independently, they will increase reading comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. With an accompanying reading journal they will receive credit for reading, analyze their reading, and have a written conversation with me about the book they're reading.

As I mentioned earlier, donations to this project will widen the selection of my classroom library.

In addition to the classics I already have, students will get to choose from the latest bestsellers. When students find a book that they fall in love with, they are more likely to seek out similar books and become a lifelong reader.
