You know the rush you get when you find the perfect pair of running shoes and wear them for the first time? Or, what about that feeling you get when you use a brand new piece of equipment for your favorite sport for the first time? It's pretty amazing and motivating.
Our student athletes are energetic, enthusiastic 6th, 7th and 8th graders at a middle school in Aurora, Colorado.
The athletes at our school are a wonderful mix of cultures, races, and backgrounds. Many of our students come from military families as well. Many of them, though, have not had the chance to have that motivating rush of new, fully functioning equipment and we want to try to fix that.
The athletes in our school include some of the fittest students in the building and they have done many incredible things with some very old, outdated, insufficient equipment.
My Project
Over the years, our floor hockey equipment has gotten some seriously good use. So much so, in fact, that we do not have enough equipment for more than 16 students to play - and with class sizes of over 80, that just doesn't work. We would love to be able to bring back floor hockey to our curriculum and continue to build our PE program with a variety of activities beyond the usual football, basketball and volleyball programs.
In addition to adding variety back to our PE program, we'd love to use a floor hockey unit to continue our students development in hand-eye coordination as well as team-work and sportsmanship.
