Many of my students come from broken homes and deal with things that no child should have to deal with. The majority of our school receive free or reduced-rate lunches, and many of those children come to school hungry.
I want to give my students the tools to expand their horizons and reach their true potential.
I cannot express how wonderful it is to see my students engaged in robotics.
My Project
I have four classes per semester of robotics and we are always looking for engaging STEM activities. My students spent a week researching new technology that they wanted to have in the classroom and these robots were their top picks.
These robots will challenge my class to program the robots to move through obstacles on a maze and open their minds to new programming languages.
These will be a wonderful addition to our classroom and will challenge my students to think critically and problem-solve to achieve their goals.
My goal is to get enough programmable robots that students can be in pairs and not in groups of four or five. Smaller groups allow each student to have more one on one time with the robot instead of sitting back and letting someone else take charge. I have seen students that usually cause trouble in other classes find their purpose in robotics class. I had a student tell me that before my class she had no idea what she wanted to be when she grew up, but after a few months, she confessed that she was letting herself dream about being an engineer. She would be the first in her family to even go to college, let alone be an engineer. My class allows students to test out programming, building, and researching in a safe environment and I have seen amazing natural talents emerge.
