Help me give my students books which will provide both a window and a mirror for my emerging advocates to reflect their own experience as well as the experiences of others.
The students with whom I currently work are already at-risk due to a multitude of emotional and behavioral concerns. Each of these students is at a critical transformation point; they have been accepted to our intensive therapeutic and academic program focused on the whole child. These young minds are our most divergent and struggling learners; they possess excellent raw talent and insight into many issues but are restricted in their participation in experiential learning in the general education setting due to their ongoing behavior.
Beyond improving social-emotional skills necessary to successfully transition back to their schools, exposure to the bravery as well as social injustice highlighted in the chosen books will expand my students world view while building a sense of what authentic civic engagement is.
My Project
The books requested will help my students expand their understanding of and competency in authentic reading and writing. These new titles will not only augment our depleted library, titles like "Asylum Seekers" will deepen my diverse learners' background knowledge while exposing them to remarkable historical figures and current events. Additionally, the variety of books requested ensure each reader will find topics at their interest and ability level.
Through our Inquiry-based Readers/Writers Workshop, my students will begin to see how our academic tasks prepare them for their future careers.
By exploring and researching, they will become advocates, scientists, and authors - proactive engaged citizens.
