My Students

My teacher partner and I are the proud teachers of 240 students who are the perfect representation of a Title I middle school. Our students range in every area of growth and development imaginable.

We have students who come from homes with involved, educated, concerned parents, and we have students who have more instability at home than any child ever should.

Our students know that our classroom is a safe space for learning and taking risks without fear or judgment.

We have students who read at high school levels sitting beside and working collaboratively with students struggling with elementary vocabulary. However their differences make our school proud and a great place to grow as a learner!

My Project

Every Friday, our students participate in Current Event Fridays where we read a non-fiction article related to world events. Oftentimes, that current event is directly connected to the lessons we are learning in Social Studies. With students watching less and less news programs, we want to bring important and relevant news to them, at their level. Students love Current Event Fridays because it fosters debates and discussions in the classroom that help our students learn about different perspectives and expand their own at the same time. Current Event Fridays allow for our students to practice reading non-fiction text and finding and using evidence from those texts to support their claims in writing and during class discussion. We have seen amazing growth in our students when we bring current text sets into our classroom.
