Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The children in my classroom are from a low economic urban area with diverse family backgrounds. My school is an urban school with a free breakfast and lunch program that serves all of our students. My students come together to attend our blended public Montessori School. They are students who desire literary experiences.
My student's primary source for these rich literary experiences is our school.
While some have never been to a public library before my students lack the access to a wide range of literature. Exposure to rich literature will engage them, produce phonemic awareness skills, build vocabulary and schema. My students love all types of literature and get extremely excited when they are read or are reading a book!
My Project
A listening center will create exposure to rich literature which will engage my students while producing phonemic awareness skills. A listening center with rich literature will also help to build vocabulary and schema and develop a life long appreciation of reading. An independent listening center will fit seamlessly with our blended Montessori program which fosters independence.
A listening center will continue to support our common core standard program through the reinforcement of English Language art skills that have already been taught in a whole group setting and then reinforced through independent work.
A listening center will continue to fill the literacy gap that my students are challenged with on a day to day basis. Exposure to spoken language at an early age will help increase a strong literacy foundation in each of my students. This strong foundation will carry them through each grade level of their academic career.
