Inspiring Curiosity and Discovery Through Play Materials
Help me give my students items that will bring physical movement and inspire curiosity and discovery into the classroom and the home through the use of the stepping stones, magnetic building set and the pretend play tractor set.
As an early childhood special education teacher, I teach and work with students between the ages of birth to three years of age who demonstrate delays in their development or have a disability in the home. Specifically, these students experience a variety of physical, sensory, social, communication or cognitive needs. We know that all learning begins with the body. Movement is so important. When a child moves he is learning. The students we teach are building their sensory experiences, their sense of adventure, and their excitement for learning by being able to explore their world in different ways through the use of active play and being able to be engaged while having fun.
Integrating more movement into the students'day will increase their attention. These items can be used for different levels of abilities and ages. These tools will enhance and promote cooperative play. For example, completing a puzzle requires a trial and error process which develops hand and eye coordination as well.
Blocks offer a child to use their imagination, take turns with their friends, and discover they have ideas they can create while developing their language and social abilities.
Play is one of the main ways students learn and develop. Through movement activities such as the tunnel, students can connect concepts to action.
