Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is nestled in a small neighborhood in Chicago, educating 750 enthusiastic students, grades PK-8. Its tight-knit community is like none other, bursting with compassion for its students and a steadfast drive to help them succeed in whatever dreams they might have for the future. My students are full of curiosity and creativity and are an absolute joy to teach and make music with.
When I accepted the position of General Music Teacher at the start of the 2018 school year, I did not have a music classroom.
For the entirety of the school year I taught from a cart, wheeling instruments and materials to each homeroom for music class. This year I am fortunate enough to be able to teach in an actual classroom, but still do not have enough instruments/materials to fit the needs of the large class sizes. The students are so excited to come to music class every day, and they deserve to be able to explore music through as many means as possible. I am a passionate teacher that is committed to creating a classroom environment where students are able to fully express themselves creatively through music and discover who they are.
My Project
Having a classroom set of Orff inspired instruments, which includes a bass xylophone, two alto xylophones, and two soprano glockenspiels, allows me to teach skills in harmony, improvisation, and creativity.
Melodic percussion is the key to developing a student’s musical foundation and allows them to see the relationship between the notes they hear, play, and sing.
With these instruments, students will be able to play and create simple melodies, accompany songs, and enrich the musical stories we create in class. These instruments will engage students in expressive music-making and inspire them to become composers and creators in music and the world. Orff instruments are an investment that will benefit many students for years to come.
