I want my students to feel fulfilled at the end of the year. I want them to feel as though this year in Kindergarten with me has been eye opening and full of new learning experiences. I want them to feel as if they've been on an incredible journey of creativity and inspiration.
My students love books.
They love reading books, and they love when I read books, but they also just enjoy looking at the books and making up their own stories. I've seen groups of them huddled around a book open on the floor and pointing out the crazy things in an illustration. They always want to look at the newest book I get from the book fair or the book club. They absorb books like a sponge.
My Project
My students will listen to these books read aloud during story time and then get to enjoy the books when they are put in the classroom library. I know they will love pouring through the pages and rereading the text and examining the beautiful artwork.
I believe that kids are inspired by art and illustrations.
I've seen my students gravitate to the books with the elaborate illustrations or the funny tricks it does with words or pages. Think of some recent great books like Herve Tullet's, "Press Here." My students love that book. It was one of the first books I read to them this year and I saw them gravitate to this book over and over again. Original and vivid books pull my students in to reading.
