The students in my classes are so passionate about life! They are fantastic storytellers and compassionate speakers.
One of my favorite parts of working with them is their desire to make their voices heard and find their place in the world.
They come from a very large variety of cultural backgrounds, and they care deeply about sharing those backgrounds with their community and each other. They root for each other to succeed and celebrate each other's successes. They're such a great group of young people!
My Project
I hope to teach a reading unit in which the students get to pick the book of their choice that interests them. There are few copies of books in our small-town library, and the waiting list is long for the popular ones. I've chosen books that are critically acclaimed and rated high among their age group. I want to give them access to books like "The Hate You Give" for the students who are interested in social justice. I want them to have access to a new fantasy series that will get them hooked on reading a series like "Caraval" and "Ever the Hunted." Books like "Turtles All the Way Down" is great for those who are interested in mental illness or enjoy exploring the world from another perspective.
Reading books of their own choosing will help the students have more of a say in their education and foster a love for reading that can't be achieved by the one-size-fits-all curriculum.
Getting a classroom library with high-interest and relatable books will help my students become inspired by reading!
