The 2018-2019 school year will be my second year teaching and my first year in my own classroom, teaching in my certification area: Secondary ELA.
My 30 twelfth grade students live an a rural area that can sometimes seem stifling to a young adult.
My hope is that through language arts, they will have the opportunity to broaden their worldview and step outside of their comfort zones. Each of these students has the potential to do amazing things, regardless of their background or whatever obstacles may arise to challenge them.
When I mentioned that we would be reading some of the works of Shakespeare in our course, my seniors groaned at the thought.
My hope for this set of books is that I can inspire a new found appreciation for Shakespeare through humor.
What better work to do so than A Midsummer Night's Dream? We will explore the relationships between characters, the concept of the play within the play and their mirrored themes, and the word play of one of the classics. I feel that pairing a comedy with the many Shakespearean tragedies we have available to us will enable these students to find joy in their coursework.
