Teaching a child to read is one of the most important milestones of their educational career. Various instructional components can assist in this essential stop along the scholastic journey. One piece of the reading puzzle is listening to reading and engaging in interactive storybooks.
My students are eager kindergarteners ready to learn.
My 25 five and six year old students are apart of a school that consists of 82.6% low income students from diverse races and ethnicities. Our school is committed to teaching lifelong learners in a safe environment. Our teachers are dedicated to tailoring instruction to meet the diverse needs of each student. We understand that every student is different and strive to help each student reach his/her highest potential.
Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many of our students have little to no technology available to them or Internet access and may not be able to afford an array of books. However, these circumstances do not hinder their excitement to learn. My students come to school motivated to become brand new readers and writers.
My Project
Speakaboos is an award-winning software that is geared for children ages 2-6. Speakaboos engages students with an interactive storybook library centered around children's interests. Each storybook is tested with kids to ensure reading comprehension and engagement.
Upon receiving these materials my students will have the opportunity to regularly listen to highly appealing audiobooks that can aide the reading process is many ways. Audiobooks can: introduce students to books above their reading level, model good interpretive reading, teach critical listening skills, introduce new genres that students might not otherwise consider, and introduce new vocabulary.
Students will have the opportunity to use the software daily during literacy rotations. Students will have additional opportunities to listen to reading, or read along with as their skills progress, every week during computer lab visits. It may also be used during intervention times
Funding of this project will give our students opportunities they may not otherwise receive.
To begin with, students will have access to highly engaging and interactive software. Using this software will expose students to technology they may not otherwise have regular access to. Additionally, students will be able to hear what good reading sounds like as they are read to-an experience they may not regularly receive. This project will guide their way on their journey as new readers.
