My students need books at their reading level such as Crenshaw, The Hate U Give, and the Percy Jackson series, to continue to foster their love for reading with books that also help inspire them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The 40 fifth graders I teach daily are from a Title 1 school made up of over 500 diverse students. Over 80% of our students are from low socioeconomic households. Last year, our community was hit pretty hard by Hurricane Harvey, and we have worked hard to continue to create a safe and creative school and classroom culture.
My students are creative, intuitive, and love finding new ways to learn!
I'm always looking for ways to provide that excitement for learning.
While around half of my students are preforming on or above grade level, I teach several students with deficits in reading and writing. It is part of my daily mission to provide engaging and stimulating lessons and activities to help close those gaps and have all students be successful.
My Project
This year I moved from 4th to 5th grade, and my students' reading levels have reached far beyond a lot of the books currently in my classroom library. This project will fund books mostly at their middle school reading level such as the "Percy Jackson" series, 'The Girl Who Drank the Moon", and "The Hate U Give."
Providing books to challenge and inspire my students is vital to their growth as readers.
It is very important to me to have a classroom library that serves the diverse reading levels of my students.
A lot of the books I am requesting show a range of several different characters of various ethnicities and backgrounds. Most of these characters show perseverance, bravery, and determination. I believe it is vital that my students have an opportunity to read and learn about these people and characters who may have started out in similar situations as they are in now. In today's society, diversity is so important. These materials will provide an easy way to represent honorable character traits in a diverse range of people.
