Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
students work hard every day to transition into middle school, arriving each day prepared to challenge themselves more than they did the previous day.
With their focus on overcoming personal and academic challenges experienced throughout middle school, my students are ready to explore personal goals, career interests and life opportunities that give them something to reach for.
Many of our students will become the first in their family to go to college. Nearly all qualify for free or reduced cost lunch and come from single parent homes and homes where parents work multiple jobs to provide. More often than not, our students see struggle to articulate what success means within their realities and see college and success as more of a dream. As their school counselor, I take great pride in cultivating these dreams so that they may eventually become realized.
My Project
Students spend an hour every day reading independently before the start of their school day. These materials will improve the quality of their daily experiences and foster a love for reading! Students will become stronger, life long avid readers. Students will improve their literacy skills as well as social competence. Students will be able to become more empathetic members of the school community and will apply the lessons learned from their new books to problem solve real life application in overcoming personal and social difficulties. Students will feel more confidence in their interactions with peers and staff and will demonstrate improved confidence in reading and participating in their classes.
