Ms. Cooper from Austin TX is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Inspired by Words!

My students need mentor texts (persuasive, narrative and nonfiction) to inspire and develop their own writing skills. They also need lapdesks and clipboards to be able to spread out into the room and focus on writing.

My Students

“Be yourself. Above all, let who you are, what you are, what you believe, shine through every sentence you write, every piece you finish.” – John Jakes

My third grade students love to brainstorm, write, illustrate and publish their own creative stories.

Third grade students grow so much over the year socially and intellectually. They are introduced to new genres and authors through read-alouds and mentor texts, and start to discover their favorite genres of books. As their reading skills develop, students start to enjoy writing more and more- one of their favorite activities during 'free time' is to create their own books with illustrations- alone, or collaboratively with friends.

I have a diverse classroom which is departmentalized by subject area. I am their Reading/Language Arts/Social Studies teacher and teach 44 students. Our school values inclusion and diversity, and my students include gifted and talented students, students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and students with special needs such as dyslexia and autism. They love to learn about other cultures and perspectives, and enjoy discussing their thoughts and reflections passionately!

My Project

My 3rd grade students need a variety of culturally diverse mentor texts to inspire them in their writing. The texts will help develop their reading skills by providing them with examples of different purposes and styles of writing, vivid language, and well-crafted stories.

The books I have chosen are fun to read and discuss, and many are stories about children from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, which respond to my students' own diverse backgrounds.

My students also need clipboards and lapdesks to be able to stretch out around the room and focus on their writing. Our classroom is housed in a small portable with little space to spread out and have your own space. These materials would provide an opportunity to work in other parts of the room, and even outside when it's a beautiful day.

I also chose a wireless microphone to help coax reluctant writers to read aloud their stories once they have been published.
