My Students
I am so proud of my eighteen second graders! Although they attend a Title 1 school in Florida, my students come to school every day with a purpose: learning. Despite their differences in socioeconomic status and cultural backgrounds, knowledge is the common thread among them. Thus, on a daily basis, I strive to expose them to a myriad of new experiences through literature, hands-on activities, research, technology, etc. These young, developing and inquisitive minds deserve even more than what I can provide!
My Project
Every year, my second grade students learn about Ruby Bridges through a 5-day close reading unit. Throughout the week, they read the text, "The Story of Ruby Bridges," in an effort to dig deeper for meaning. By the end of the week, they are smitten with her courage!
Unfortunately, the students don't have access to the text and illustrations, because there is only one book which belongs to me, the teacher.
This project would make it possible for every student to have a book for this unit. I can only imagine how much more meaning they would gather from this close reading unit if they were able to maneuver through the text themselves.
