My Students
I teach at a high school in Billings, Montana. Although Montana is almost entirely rural, my school is located in the center of Montana's largest town.
The students here are often dismissed or overlooked, but they are academics, artists, and leaders. Every time I walk through the halls I see those who are in need of being helped, those who are lost being led, and those who want more finding opportunities. These kids rarely get the best, but they deserve it.
My Project
The students I see throughout the day are fatigued by the pressures of curriculum. The books we read in class teach valuable lessons, but students struggle to see themselves in them.
New books with modern characters facing uniquely modern problems would go a long way in combating the ever-mounting dislike for reading that my students and I combat on a daily basis. The books on this list are novels that I have curated that deal with modern struggles.
Students can learn to love reading by seeing themselves in the protagonists. Representation is powerful, and allowing students the latitude to share in experiences will broaden their love for reading.
