Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students thrive in a dynamic, high-energy environment that encourages and inspires them to take risks.
My students are products of low-income, single-parent, broken, absent, and uneducated homes.
They are bright and funny and look to the teachers and staff as moral and educational support in addition to our classroom duties. Although they are often resistant to learning, when they become engaged in a story or passionate about a writing assignment, they shine with curiosity and brilliance.
My Project
Reading City of Thieves will give my students a unique look at Russia during WWII. Although much of the unit will focus on classic Russian pieces and authors, reading City of Thieves will entice them to engage in the material and see a shocking picture of the effects of war and will give context to the other pieces they read. It is important to me to find material that is not only relevant to the curriculum, but that is, most importantly, engaging for the students and that will teach them about life and the human experience...not just literary devices and analysis.
Without this project, my students will be inundated with literature that is much older and much less relevant to them.
By donating to this project, you are not only supporting engaging curriculum in my classroom, but you are also helping to show students that reading can be an entertaining and invigorating activity...not just a chore.
