I have incredible children to teach every day they come eager and curious. First grade is one of those years where they love school, they love learning and discovering. 6-7 year old children file into my classroom each day with their homework in tow and smiles on their faces. They want to share their life with you. They love our school. These children thrive on opportunity. I want to give them opportunities. I want to provide the environment for optimal development.
Because our school is fairly small, we have the capacity to discover the needs of all individuals.
We have a cooperative learning environment where the children know their teacher will move heaven and earth for them. The future is so bright we have to wear shades.
My Project
I am working with small groups during remote learning. The books are needed materials that will help me promote reading in a positive way at home. With technology being a forefront for learning during Covid-19, I have found that holding a book in their hands makes a big difference. Many of my parents do not have resources for reading books on their child's levels at home. I have tried using books online and although they are a great resource and have their place, they are no substitute for a good fun book on a child's reading level. I have often wished I could afford these books for my own classroom as I saw a love for reading that they can provide
I send books home in red book bags that I bought but I find that I do not have enough books on certain levels to continue to increase vocabulary and just the desire to read more.
These books will do that for my students during this trying time of Covid-19. Remote learning has benefited from technology, but this material will allow them to experience the confidence and success that comes through practice and being motivated.
The electricity kit is a hands-on science kit that I have wanted to purchase for 5 years. When I teach electricity to first graders this hands-on activity makes science come to life. It will again get them off their tablets and into real life. The paper organizer will allow me to make remote learning not just for online work, but I will be able to sort their writing work easily to be sent home.
