This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I public charter school with 99.9% receiving free or reduced-price lunch in one of the poorest neighborhoods in our city. My students are amazing for the backgrounds that they come from. Some do not have the internet at home and some are not aware that there are other ways of life that they can strive for.

The teachers at our school all spend a lot of our own money on supplies and just basic things that the students may need.

Sometimes that means we supply breakfast for them because they cannot get to school in time to eat. Other times, that means we supply general school supplies. We do this because every student deserves a chance to succeed.

My Project

The items I have selected will inspire the students and allow them to feel more invested in their classroom experience. The printer will help out in those times that the school copier will not work (more often than not). The markers, laminating sheets, glossy adhesive shelf paper, and curriculum all work together to provide a better learning experience. The wobble chair, yoga ball, floor pillows, ottoman and stackable stools will provide flexible seating.

Flexible seating allows students the ability to decide for themselves the best place to work around the room.

Currently, I have a footstool and a rocking chair(in need of new cushions) and the rest of the students work on the floor or clipboards when they don't want to be at their desks. This seating lets them figure out where they will concentrate the best, giving them the skills to focus, cooperate and be more comfortable doing it. Really, the only time they work at their desk is when they have an exit ticket or test, other times (including stations) they are allowed to move around the room. The students are given a specific amount of time to find a place (why the timer is needed) and then they must sit and work.
