This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my classroom, we celebrate the culture and diversity of our high school community. Every student has a voice that deserves to be heard, and they are aware that their writing has the ability to change the world. We focus on social justice and literary activism.

We are a high school with students from all over the world.

All of our students are recent immigrants, and many of them asylum seekers and refugees. Our school is a place where they feel safe and inspired to be their best selves. They are motivated, determined and dedicated to their education in America.

My Project

Malala Yousafzai is a hero to many of our students, and the ability to see the documentary film about her life would mean so much to them. This trip to the theater will be the culmination of Literary Activism unit, a unit that intends to teach students about the power of their literary voice and the ability that writers have to change the world.

Many of my students cannot afford to go to the movies, and this film will be both inspirational and educational.

Malala is a student who overcame unbelievable odds and used her experiences to inspire the world. She is a perfect, real-world connection for our students to relate to.
