Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Dallas Hillcrest High School Academy of Media, Visual and Performing Arts will implement a broadcast and film program at the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year. The MVPA Academy is part of a district-wide small learning communities initiative, also known as Career Pathways.
Unlike the usual courses offered in your everyday high school, small learning communities provide students with the unique opportunity of participating in a ?real world? education by experiencing hands-on courses teaching them the skills they need to be a productive industry professional. I believe this innovative school structure, along with extensive partnerships and support services, will make it possible for us to help students to develop solid, effective, and lasting career skills.
The MVPA Academy's broadcast and film program will focus on building upon the student's imagination by giving them instruction and resources needed to apply themselves through visual and creative expression. It will offer an outlet for those students who sometimes get lost in the crowd; those students who feel they are different, or outcasts, or just struggling to make it through a typical day at school. This program will reach out and guide them to see that there is a bigger world out there than what is behind school walls and that they do have a contribution to make to society, and ultimately lead them to stay in school, graduate and pursue a post-secondary education or enter the career of their choice.
The only current impediment to instituting this program is funding. We respectfully request your help in obtaining the initial funding for computers, equipment, and studio needs. While we can contribute to a portion of the costs, we will be very grateful if you will consider providing additional funding to make the project successful. Any contribution you are willing to make will get us a little bit closer to helping our students develop the important skills they need.
