With budget cuts, resources are limited and scarce. I have purchased many of my classroom materials. As a reading teacher in a school with low literacy rates, I have invested in many highly motivating books to entice my students to read. Unfortunately they are stacked on the floor and in boxes.
My students are struggling readers from diverse backgrounds.
10% of our students speak a language other than English at home. Many of my students are affected by poverty and most have become academically discouraged, largely because of low literacy levels. Approximately 60% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. I would love to be able to entice my student to improve their reading by reading more. I would like A bookshelf would make my classroom library more accessible to my students. The Bluford High series is a high interest series of books with diverse characters. Many students find these books engaging and I would love to add these to my classroom library.
My Project
A bookshelf in my classroom would allow me to shelve and display the various books I have available for students to borrow. A reading classroom without a bookshelf does not help create an environment that values literacy. If students could see the many books I have for them to read, it would make it easier for them to choose books. Books would also be more readily available for me to help students choose books which might interest them or inspire them to read, such as the Bluford High series, a group of high interest and motivating books.
One of the proven ways to increase a student's literacy abilities is by reading! Having a bookshelf would promote the value of reading and make it easier for my students to choose books to read. How can we instill the value of books and reading to students when books are stacked on the floors, even in the reading room? Your donations to purchase a bookshelf will help me to promote reading to my students and show them they are valued!
How can we motivate our students to develop a love of reading and become life long readers if we don't model the value of books?
If my library was on shelves it would entice students to borrow and read because the books would be so much more accessible to them! The Bluford High series would add to our growing classroom library!
