This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from diverse backgrounds and have struggled in traditional academic settings. They often lack resources at home, but bring with them unique ways of seeing the world and talents not often valued in a school setting.
My students need relevance, and they need to be seen.
Every child has gifts they can offer to the world--gems hidden inside them--that education can help to bring forth. They can sing, dance, play sports, create poetry, build relationships, take care of their families, and more.
My Project
Many of my students struggle with reading. I want to create a culture which encourages them to connect with books in a way they never have before. I want them to have TIME in class to read, CHOICE in what they are reading, and a comfortable SPACE to read. Your donations will help fund a classroom library and reading nook that will help my students become life-long readers.
My students deserve to see themselves reflected in the books they read!
In 2015 only 7% of literature for children and teens featured non-white characters. The books you will be donating all feature characters from diverse backgrounds with themes that are relevant for my students, while still challenging them and building their literacy skills. My school does not have a library! The library you are helping to build in my classroom will be their primary source of engaging books.
