Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine your life without your phone? Your computer? What about in 10 years from now? Help underprivileged 4th grade students learn the technological skills that will most certainly BE their future!
My 4th grade students are inspiring!
They come from underprivileged and sometimes impoverished homes where it's hard to keep the electricity on, let alone have money left over for a computer. Despite odds set against them, they work hard to overcome struggles most adults would cower under and strive to improve their life by hard work, learning, and dedication. This being said they often still do not receive the same opportunities that many students in America have: technology. Just the fact that their teacher has an iPhone sends thrills through their little bones! These kids are highly motivated by something as cool as a computer or cellphone and need this kind of skill to be successful in our future world. Not only that, but they need motivation now too. Many are 1-2-and more years behind in math and/or reading and access to online programs in the classroom will provide that extra help to get them succeed and achieve a little more every day!
My Project
These 4 tablets will be a daily center in my classroom where the students can access the programs already purchased by our school and free online programs that increase knowledge and comprehension in all subject areas. They can write and publish in blogs, emails, wikis,etc.-I currently have NO student computers in the class and we visit the computer lab once every week or two.-They will also be a part of lessons, where demonstrations and investigations can be made through our wondrous online world of web-quests and interactive media. These tablets will be available with access to online eBooks for our daily "read to self/others". This will motivate my struggling readers and help increase their fluency and comprehension with interactive dictionaries, programs that help read aloud, record and playback your voice, etc. Most importantly I will have freedom to promote project based learning in my classroom where students learn while developing lifelong skills and creating lifelong learners.
I believe that our world-our future-my students' future- will be wholly and entirely centered around technology.
I think it is an absolute injustice to not provide them with access to as much technology as possible. My average student only uses a computer once every week or two, for 30 minutes at a time. This "project" will increase their time to possibly even 30 minutes daily. Not only will this increase their technological skills, but it increase their success in academia and life skills too.
