Former Secretary of Education, William Bennet wrote, “The arts are essential elements of education just like reading, writing, and arithmetic…Music, dance, painting, and theater are keys to unlock profound human understanding and accomplishment” (Swann-Hudkins, 2002).
Our students have art once a week.
Imagine that you are a first grader who is excited to paint and create! Once a week is hardly enough time. I am looking for supplies for 28 students that I can use to incorporate the arts in our classroom; we want to support the arts and give students the chance to create.
My Project
If we have brushes, paint, construction paper, and wiggly eyes, we can use these materials to represent the setting of our stories. We can graphically represent addition and subtraction problems. We can explore the concepts of symmetry, congruence, patterning all by using the materials from this project.
Brushes, paper, paint, and messy mats are not things schools provide to a first grade classroom.
Our art teacher has supplies, but needs them for the 500+ students that she sees once a week. If we have our own supplies we can begin to unlock doors where only art has the key.
