Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have grit! Character. Spirit. Perseverance. Passion.
Everyone has a story.
My students may only be 9, 10 and 11, but they already have a lifetime worth of stories to tell. It is my job to provide them with the tools to help them refine their storytelling.
I am one of the lucky people who enjoy going to work every day, so I am happy to be part of the 99%. My students are free spirits and are sponges waiting to soak everything up. They attend school in a densely populated part of the city.
My Project
Since the start of the school year, our scholars have been fully committed to reading a book every month. This includes writing prompts about the reading assignments, comprehension questions, and discussions. As we entered distance learning, we have exhausted our book resources. We are in desperate need of literature opportunities.
Right now, the majority of my students do not have their own books, and rely on online books for their reading materials and unfortunately, online books often do not allow for students to engage and annotate as would an actual book.
I would LOVE to give each of my students a copy of one of my favorite chapter books (For Women's History Month) so that they can read it at home and continue with Zoom Conference book club discussions, much like we did when we were in the classroom.
I know my students will love this new addition to our distance learning and Zoom meetings. They will then have a book of their own to read with their family. I also hope this will entice them to want to read more and build on the amazing progress they have already made!
