Help me give my students a bluetooth speaker, water bottles and jump ropes for a new Inspirational Cardio group!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students come from a large underprivileged city and underfunded school system where poverty, violence, and a lack of basic necessities; are obstacles that can easily detour them away from their education... leaving them disengaged, frequently tardy or chronically absent. I am in awe of the fact that their surroundings and varied hardships, do not dim their enthusiasm for education once they are here.
One hundred percent of my students receive free lunch and an unbelievable 53% of my students are failing this 2018-19 school year due to attendance!
While my students often struggle to verbalize or write about on paper what they think or feel, they are able to express feelings through music whether they are singing, playing, dancing to it or creating it. Einstein said, “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.” I believe Einstein was not just describing himself, but each one of my students.
Negative or demeaning music prevents some students from participating in activities, building relationships with other students and feeling like they belong. Inspirational Cardio will exercise their vocal cords and bodies while allowing them to build community with each other. Music with positive messages will be sung and used for all of their workout sessions and rehearsals. This Cardio group will be student-run and a place where all
students can feel comfortable exercising and learning music.
Teens need physical activity every day and Inspirational Cardio will work to balance physical exercise and learning to take better care of themselves, with taking care of what goes into their minds also! Zumba, walking track, jumping rope and climbing stairs are some of the exercises on their list. I've read that "65% of high school students did not meet recommended levels of physical activity, on 5 or more of the previous 7 days. 35% of high school students watched television for 3 or more hours per day on an average school day, and the list goes on! While dancing to music gives them some physical exercise, it is not enough.
Your donation to this project will give students the ability to play music for workouts (Bluetooth speaker,) stay hydrated (water bottles,) and work up a sweat (jump ropes,) in a no conflict, safe, positive environment. Music and physical activity have been proven to: reduce anxiety, stress, and depression, improve self-esteem, boost academic performance and help establish lifelong healthy habits. Inspirational Cardio will allow these students to belong, build community and hopefully encourage better attendance.
