Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a middle school that has suffered, like many schools, from library cut backs. Our librarian is on only half the time. She is barely able to keep up with lost books and returns, let alone designing lesson plans to motivate art students.
I love teaching art, it is a gift and a passion for me on all levels. My vision is to have a detailed and varied art library in the classroom that helps students become inspired to look deeper into their creative selves.
Middle school students are so bright, inquisitive, honest and visual. They are so responsive when viewing art for the first time. I would design a scavenger hunt for art and artists that would kick start their naturally inquisitive minds.
I also find that kids often need to look at examples of paintings, drawings and sculpture to get ideas on what they want to create. I find that books are the best way of inspiring more art, as opposed to videos or slides, because kids want to "do" art as soon as they get an inspiration. Thus, the more art books the better, including big colorful art books that center on one artist, and books that compile the work of many different artists or art styles.
I would like to start with 17 books so I can design a lesson plan that allows each student to hold a book in his or her own hands to look at without having to share with a neighbor. Thank you for your consideration.
