My students need fundamental history, literature, and fiction books to give them opportunities to dive deeper into classroom topics, learn about other perspectives, and simply enjoy reading!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Education and reading has the power to expand students' worldviews. In providing a space where they are challenged, encouraged, and inspired, teachers can be part of their path toward success as engineers, businesspeople, educators, ambassadors, etc. I love being part of this process of my students who are eager to learn, dedicated, innovative, and passionate.
My students go on to top universities and represent some of the best of what our county has to offer.
Our county is one of the highest achieving predominantly black counties in the country. Our high school is the top performing traditional public school in the county! However, as a public school, we still struggle to provide for the needs of our students.
My Project
A classroom library is key to each student's education. As a social sciences classroom, students will be equipped with some of the greatest historical perspectives from diverse authors. There are a set of books about American history, focusing on different groups throughout history. There are books about different historical events (Japanese Internment, Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam War, etc).
They will be able to read historical fiction and stories from places here in the United States and around the world written for and about people like them!
The fiction literature that is included will give students the opportunity to have new, exciting, and eye-opening books at their fingertips. These books will guide students to a love of reading that will inspire them for years to come!
