This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been ELA teacher number three for 7th and 8th grade students at a Title I school. I have been told that they have given up, that they don't care about turning in work, and that they feel disrespected. Honestly, I can only imagine what they are going through.

But amongst their struggles, I see hopeful kids, who, with guidance and attention, will do incredible things and who will grow up to be successful.

While we have had only five weeks together, the growth and the change in their demeanor have been incredible and I know their fervor for life and learning will continue to grow.

My Project

My students read a single diary excerpt in a textbook and the connection to Anne Frank was instantaneous. My students began inquiring about Anne's life; "Did she have a boyfriend?", "Was she able to leave the annex?", "Did she survive?" Anne's accounts will give my students an uninhibited view into a thirteen year-old's interpretation of what transpired during World War Two.

Donating copies of Anne Frank's diary will allow my students to connect to this historical figure on a personal level, as well as inspire them to document their own struggles and triumphs.

Furthermore, they will be to see the power of the written word, and its lasting effects on society.
