Help me give my students access to written material through the use of an IPEVO V4K Ultra High Definition USB Document Camera. This will enable my students to read along with me as I point to each word.
I work with a group of third-grade students who struggle to learn to read due to developmental delays or specific learning disabilities. These kids are amazing! They struggle with academics but they never stop trying. They want to read so badly but must be content to simply look at the pictures in books or retell themselves stories I have previously read.
When students struggle to learn, it is particularly important that material is presented to them in ways that will inspire them to persevere.
Lessons must be differentiated to suit the abilities of each individual. Engaging activities and visuals are particularly important for students with disabilities who must draw on various learning styles to reach their maximum potential.
I have a smart board in my room but no way to display written material for all to see. I give my kiddos printouts, but since they can't read yet, they are unable to read along with me. For emergent readers, it is very important for them to see how we read from left to right and that words have spaces between them. I will be able to model how fluent reading includes changing pace to match content and account for punctuation. I will be able to demonstrate that answers to questions can be found in the text and highlight the information.
Modeling the use of text to improve fluency and comprehension
is an essential part of the learning experience and one that I have been unable to initiate adequately thus far.
I am also asking for a subscription to Time for Kids as I teach social studies and have no resources. This subscription will enable me to use high-interest, color copies of exciting current-event issues. They will find the main idea in various articles, compare and contrast information, make connections to their own lives, and view maps, charts, and photos.
This is my first time using Donors Choose, and if you are interested in helping me out and use promotional code LIFTOFF, I am eligible for matching donations of up to $50.
