This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Middle school was always a tough or interesting time for everyone, right? There's a slew of peer influences and interactions that make the middle school experience so fragile to the development of a "pre-teen". Students at my school come to me to talk about whatever is bothering at the moment, which made me realize they are going through some tough times. My energetic, bold middle school students at Carrie P. Meek/ Westview are in need of a productive outlet. This year I decided to bring a girls mentoring program to the school that was adopted from a successful one at North Miami Middle School.
The program will be catered toward the development of middle school girls who need to vent, learn, and seek guidance throughout the year.
I have tons of workshops, field trips, community service, guest speakers and activities that I want to them to experience throughout the program. Through these experiences my goal is to create a space where they can build a sisterhood with each other while they all grow into leaders.
My Project
Throughout the school day, my students' core classes doesn't give them any time to write out their feelings and goals. Every week during the Sister Circle meetings, we will be answering writing prompts in our journals. The girls can use this time to vent and express themselves as freely as possible. I want to gift the students with these journals at the very first meeting (10/15/18) so we can start off right away. Also, the book, 'For Colored Girls', will be used during our meetings as a way for the girls to relate to each other with their similar experiences.
