It amazes me the wide variety of kids I get to work with each day. My students range from shy and quiet to wild and crazy and each one of them are an important piece to our band puzzle. In my classes, each kid has the opportunity to learn one brass instrument (trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, and tuba). We start with the basics of rhythm and pitch identification and then jump into how we make that happen on the instruments! Remember learning to ride a bike for the first time and the excitement of finally getting to ride solo? That's the same energy my students have when they come to band.
Band is exciting because of all it has to offer for our students.
Some kids need a space to be creative; they join band. Some kids need a space to feel like part of a team; they join band. Some kids want something to do on Friday nights; they join band. Some kids just want to make music so they join band. For whatever reason a kid joins band, they'll find out that we love what we do and want our kids to have every opportunity to succeed.
My Project
Just as student personalities come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so do their learning styles. Auditory learners are able to learn by hearing. The Korg TM-60 Tuners will play the pitch for the kids to match. However, some students are visual learners and having the tuner mic clipped to their instrument will give them a visual of whether they are playing in tune or not.
Intonation is part of the band foundation and the tuners will give our kids, no matter what their primary learning style, the opportunity to find success.
These tuners also have a built in metronome and seeing as how a steady beat is also foundational to a good band we will be able to work towards both using this one tool.
