Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I do not see students in front of me, I see future musicians and hard-working individuals who may one day perform at Carnegie Hall. Students volunteered to come to the new school that was closer to their house. The school is in a urban environment where the crime rates keep students inside at night. We are fortunate for a new building, but we are lacking supplies.
My future musicians all receive free or reduced price lunch which sets them up to be ready to learn how music helps shape their lives.
Not all my students will be contestants on the next American Idol, but I am sure a few of mine will be the judges.
My Project
In music class it is obvious that students need instruments. I am asking for a guitar and violin. I am hoping to find students that want to learn above and beyond what I can teach them in class. Students will be taking lessons on classical and pop songs from guitar to violin.
Students need to be able to learn all types of songs, by using pop tunes to transfer there understanding to classical and band repertoire, I hope guitar and violin will make that transition smooth and fun.
In order to expose them to all types of music it is essential that I have books with songs from their childhood as well as from the radio and transition the reading skills to reading scales and exercises, for students to learn how to play at the highest caliber. With the posters showing all different musical instruments and notes and books with a variety of types of songs, students will be free to listen and try all types of musical genres.
While listening to the music I will be able to write music on the board and have the students practice writing it on their white boards. It would be a true test of their musical abilities if they were able to write music and then try to play it, or vice versa. With the white boards there is no need to "waste" paper, they can just erase and try again.
In order to get all my students involved I would like to have something for everyone in my music class, even if that is just taking notes on what they learn with fun pens, reading a poster around the room or rocking out using an instrument.
